As far as PS, if you know anybody that works in a school district or anybody who is a college student, they can get CS4 for about $299 which is not cheap by any means but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than the normal price!
Good luck - we can try to learn and swap tips together! I did get a book with a CD with tutorials linked to it. I just haven't had the time to really sink my teeth into it.
Now, I need to really know what these little figurines are...
